If you just want to know whether ATV insurance is a legal requirement in the state of Maine, the answer is no, you are not legally required to carry ATV insurance in Maine.

However, it’s hard to recommend riding a four-wheeler without, at the least, a liability plan. The nature of ATV use makes it risky, even for seasoned professionals, to ride without a net, so to speak.

If you opt for insurance on your ATV, a typical policy is going to include the following:

  • Collision coverage. When your ATV is damaged in a collision, collision coverage is the insurance that’s going to cover the repairs.
  • Comprehensive coverage. Comprehensive will cover damages beyond collision. Suppose that your ATV is parked in the garage and it suffers damage in a flood or a fire. Comprehensive coverage is the policy that’s going to help you out.
  • Liability coverage. This covers damages to other people and their property. This is the important one.

Well, all three coverages are important, but liability covers expenses that may be out of your hands. If you don’t mind covering your ATV repairs out-of-pocket, that’s your prerogative, but if you run into someone else’s vehicle or property, there’s no telling how they’re going to respond. For that reason, it’s good to have liability insurance there to protect you.

You may or may not be comfortable covering damages and repairs out of your own pocket, but it’s a bad idea to ride without at least a liability insurance policy.

You can’t always control what’s going to happen when you’re out on your ATV, and you want to make sure that you have a backup plan should something happen. Get in touch with Allen Insurance and see what they can do to get you covered.
