Many people turn to credit cards as a way of building their credit but not everyone fully understands credit cards and the things they should and should not be doing in order to best build their credit.
When looking at credit cards you want to ensure that you fully understand them before diving right in to get one.
These are some facts about credit cards that many people misunderstand.
- Your credit score is impacted as soon as you apply for a card. Many people think you only see an impact if you use the card, but credit card providers will check your credit before approval and that can lower your score in the short term.
- If you do not make the full minimum payment, it will count as a missed payment. You do not want to miss a payment on your credit card because it can negatively impact your credit. For this, you want to make sure you at least make the full minimum payment.
- Having a high credit card limit isn’t a bad thing if you manage it well. You can easily get into a lot of trouble with a high limit if you are spending more than you can afford to repay. Because of this, make sure you are only spending what you can afford, even if you have a high limit.
- You don’t have to carry a balance from month to month to build credit history. Many people think this is true but if you are using the card and paying if off every month, you will get the benefits.
- You want to mix up your credit. You should open a ton of credit cards to help your credit but you should look into different types of credit, such as a mortgage.
