Some scientific questions can’t be answered on an annual schedule. JP Conte has backed two efforts that take that as a starting point, one inside a hospital and one in the hills of Sonoma County. Together they show how a donor can fund work whose importance unfolds slowly.
Both run through the J-P Conte Family Foundation, which he established in 2017. Conte, the founder and managing partner of the family office Lupine Crest Capital, has aimed the foundation at causes where sustained support matters more than a quick result.
Sustained Support at UCSF
The medical example sits at the University of California, San Francisco. A $5 million gift in November 2024 created two endowed professorships in neurology, both dedicated to Parkinson’s and other neurodegenerative diseases. Because the endowment keeps generating income, the positions can support research and teaching for the long term.
That structure suits brain science, where findings build on one another over many years. A professorship that doesn’t expire lets a researcher chase difficult questions without pausing for the next grant. The payoff can take a decade. He’s fine with that. That’s the runway JP Conte set out to provide.
A Living Laboratory at Pepperwood
The environmental example looks different but follows the same logic. Conte has supported Pepperwood, a 3,200-acre preserve in the Mayacamas Mountains, where scientists monitor weather, soil, water and wildlife across long stretches of time. The first weather station went in during 2010, and the site now runs more than 80 long-term monitoring projects.
Those readings gain value with age, as each year of data sharpens the meaning of the years around it. Long records let researchers catch shifts a brief study never could, from slow moves in rainfall to gradual changes in plant and animal populations. One year proves little. Twenty can prove a trend.
One Donor, Two Timescales
A single idea links the hospital and the preserve. Each one supports the scaffolding of discovery, the faculty, the instruments and the records, instead of paying only for one result. That scaffolding is what keeps a field moving after any single experiment ends, and it’s expensive to rebuild once it lapses.
Whether it’s a lab or a wildland preserve, Jean-Pierre Conte has put his giving behind science that needs time to prove its worth. His approach treats that distance as part of the work, and it gives researchers a rare freedom: room to ask questions whose answers may be years away. Few funders are built to wait that long, and Conte treats the waiting as part of what he’s paying for.
