Electronic devices are now part of our everyday lives. Everything from toy RC cars to advanced smartphones contain electronic circuitry that provide them with useful features. These circuits have to be carefully designed and created to ensure they perform as intended. They can have just a handful of components or several thousands depending on the complexity of the device. Circuits can be made in different ways at different stages of development. Some might use a breadboard which is a thick plastic panel with holes for components at the middle and power lines along the sides. Other use a thinner perfboard to solder components in place. However, these printed circuit boards are the most popular material for commercial and industrial applications.

High Circuit Complexity

PCBs can accommodate circuits with high complexity. No other solution can compare when it comes to fitting a large number of components on a small board. A jungle of wires will not get in the way. They can have several layers of conducting material which means that connections can flow smoothly and not have to cross each other. The traces can be etched precisely using a number of techniques. Design is done on a computer in which programs can automatically select the optimum placement of key components. Designers can also manually adjust depending on their preferences.

Ease of Replications

Once you design the circuit, you can create multiple copies to any scale. This can be the template for a dozen prototypes for testing or ten thousand circuits for products that will be sold to the public. It is not like breadboards wherein you have to do everything manually one circuit at a time. You can do chemical etching or silkscreen printing for the design that you want on several boards at the same time. There are specialist shops that provide PCB manufacturing services at a low cost. Just provide them with the CAD files and they will make everything as you specified.

Increased Lifespan

You can be certain that your designs with last. Unlike circuits that use wires, there will not be any issues with broken continuity, snags, shorts, and related problems. You can drop the circuit without having to fear about components falling off due to impact. Everything will stay on the board thanks to quality soldering. Nothing will come loose and cause a malfunction. As such, the lifespan of the whole circuit will increase. Indeed, modern devices are usually discarded not because they are no longer working but because something better came along.

Ease of Troubleshooting

It can be difficult trying to figure out what went wrong. When you have a circuit that looks like a maze or a jungle due to crisscrossing wires, it takes a while to pinpoint to problem. This is not so with PCBs as you can use a multimeter to quickly figure out what has been happening. All of the component are plain to see. The computer layout can also help finding the issue. If you want a foolproof board, then go with printed circuit boards.
